Leverington Leads Ladies to 5-0 Weekend

SANTA ROSA, Cali – Saint Martin's softball has closed out this weekend with an outstanding performance. The Saints went 5-0 over this weekend's Sonoma State Tournament, leading to one of the best starts in school history. Leading the way was pitcher Chloe Leverington who was named GNAC Pitcher of the Week with a 3-0 record, two saves, and only one earned run allowed.

The Saints started off the tournament on Friday against Sonoma State leading the whole game and only giving up one run in the bottom of the 4th inning. The last two runs scored for SMU were scored when #26 Heather Ebner came up to the plate and singled out to left field where #15 Shelby Lawson and #23 Ashley Goodale scored leaving the score 5-1.
FINAL: Saint Martin's 5, Sonoma State 1

The final Friday game was against Chico State, the Saints were tied 0-0 till the bottom of the second when #23 Ashley Goodale singled to the pitcher and batted in #5 Destiny Conerly to score the Saints the first point of the game. Following Goodale was #15 Shelby Lawson who continued to push the Saints ahead when she crushed the ball out to left center earning a triple scoring #23 Ashley Goodale, #1 Shay Lopes and #7 Vanessa Smoke. The final run of the inning was #15 Shelby Lawson when #26 Heather Ebner flied out to center field, leaving the Saints 5-0. SMU continued to fight back giving up three runs, one in the top of the third, another in the top of the sixth and lastly one in the top of the 7th. The Saints finished the game with #19 Chloe Leverington striking out Chico's Angie Acosta in the top of the 7th.

Saint Martin's softball went against two more teams on Saturday, once again Sonoma State. The first game was against Sonoma State, the game lead 0-0 till the bottom of the second when SSU scored one run after Lauren Mirtoni doubled to right center and batted in Jasmine Moreno. The Saints stayed pushing to win the battle against SSU and did so in the top of the 5th inning when #15 Shelby Lawson flied out to center field scoring #1 Shay Lopes and advancing to third #27 Mia Zachary. As #26 Heather Ebner came up to face SSU's pitcher she singled through the right side and #27 Mia Zachary scored taking the lead for the first time in the match up. No other runners scored throughout the rest of the game and the Saints won 2-1 after SSU grounded out to third base in the bottom of the 7th.

Later, Saturday the saints also played against Cal State Monterey Bay after a 0-0 score through Saturday the game was delayed finishing the 7th inning on Sunday in the morning. SMU gave up one run it CSUMB in the top of the 7th but quickly came back and won the fight. Saints #19 Olivia Matlock had a three-run walk off homerun to bring the SMU their fourth win in the tournament in California.

The final game for the SMU was against Stanislaus State. The game started and the fight was on, Stanislaus held the lead till the bottom of the 2nd inning when SMU had another homerun by #5 Destiny Conerly who homered put to left field scoring #1 Shay Lopes and #19 Olivia Matlock. This homerun made the score tied 3-3, this is where the scored stayed till the bottom of the 4th. The Saints #25 Haley Agena came to the plate and lined out to center field scoring #1 Shay Lopes once again to give the Saints the lead making the score 3-4. The following inning Stanislaus State was able to gain another run to once again tie up the score 4-4 against the Saints. While the Saints battled to break the tie between them and their opponent, they gained their final run in the bottom of the 6th. Saint Martin's earned the run they needed to break the tie and it was scored by #4 Kekai Shultz with a homer to left field, the third home run of the day for Saint Martin's. Stanislaus State was unable to come back and earn a run so the Saints won the game 5-4.

The Saint's softball team played some outstanding softball and truly showed up and showed out in California this weekend. Every team member put all their effort in to win all five games, making to one of the best starts to their season in school history.

Saint Martin's softball will be back in action on February 23rd when they start their home game schedule against Western Washington.
