ELLENSBURG, Wash. — The Saint Martin's Volleyball team lost in four sets at Central Washington on Saturday, October 11.
After going down 0-2 the Saints rallied the third set and made a strong effort in the fourth, but ultimately the comeback attempt fell short. The loss dropped SMU's record to 9-6 overall and 2-5 in GNAC play.
How It Happened
- After SMU took a 1-0 lead to start the match, CWU rallied six straight points to put the Saints behind early. The Wildcats led by as much as nine points, as the Saints played catch-up for the majority of the set. Despite several small runs, SMU was unable to make up enough ground and fell 25-18.
- The Saints built up an early 9-5 lead in the second set, but the Wildcats went on a run to cut the lead to 10-9. SMU held a steady lead, until a 7-1 run by CWU put the Saints behind 16-13. Central Washington closed the set on a 9-4 run to win 25-18 and put Saint Martin's behind two sets to none.
- The third set was the best of the day for SMU, as the Saints combined to hit .294%. The Saints fell behind 2-0, but responded with a 6-2 run that put SMU up front. CWU later bounced back with a 7-1 run of its own to put SMU behind 13-9. The set turned out to be a game of runs, as Saint Martin's rattled off a 9-1 run to go ahead 19-15. The Saints held off any late push from CWU and scored the final two points off attack errors to win 25-22 and force a fourth set.
- SMU led 7-2 early and was up 17-16 at the latest, but Central Washington's late efforts in the set ultimately sealed the match — after the set was tied 20-20, the Wildcats went on a 5-1 run to close out the set and defeat the Saints in four sets.
