Saints fall in three sets to Vikings

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Saint Martin's Volleyball team lost its road GNAC matchup at Western Washington by a score of 3-0 on Thursday, October 30.

The Saints put together a competitive showing in each set, but ultimately the Vikings pulled away in each frame, flipping the script from the two teams' first meeting in Lacey earlier in the season, when Saint Martin's was victorious in three sets.

How It Happened

  • After the Saints took a 1-0 lead to start the match, the Vikings responded with a 6-0 run that saw the home team take an early advantage. Another big run by Western Washington put Saint Martin's down 14-4. The Saints trailed by as much as 11, and trimmed the deficit to 18-13 and later 24-19. After a 3-0 rally by SMU, WWU earned the final point of the set off a kill by Devyn Oestreich to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The second set was neck-and-neck to start, as the teams played out a 10-10 tie midway through the frame. After an exchange of runs, Western Washington pulled ahead 20-17 with a 4-1 run. The Saints drew back within one point on three separate occasions late in the set, trailing 22-21, 23-22, and later 24-23. However, the Vikings won the last point on an attack error to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The third set saw the Saints hit their best percentage of the match, as the team jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Saint Martin's led as late as 12-11, and kept within a back-and-forth set up until things were knotted at 20-20. The Vikings went on a crucial 5-0 run following this point, running off with a 25-20 win in the third set to secure the match.
