NAMPA, Idaho — The Saint Martin's Volleyball team lost in five sets against Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho on Thursday, October 9.
Both teams exchanged sets in a closely-knit match, until a dramatic fifth set saw the Nighthawks take the match in five sets. The loss improved SMU's record to 9-5 overall and 2-4 in GNAC play.
How It Happened
- The first set was a close battle, as Saint Martin's won 26-24 after hitting .308% as a team. The Saints trailed 11-6 early, but fought back to tie the set at 13-13. Neither team led by more than two points for the remainder of the set, as the Nighthawks primarily held a narrow lead. Facing set point down 22-24, the Saints rallied the final four points of the set to steal a 1-0 lead. Emmy Hansen made the kill to make it 23-24, before serving the ensuing three points for the Saints.
- Northwest Nazarene hit .400% as a team in the second set, leading to a 25-17 victory over the Saints. After a slow start, SMU fought back to bring the score to 6-10, but the Nighthawks eventually built up a 22-12 lead late in the frame. The Saints pulled within seven, but Northwest Nazarene held on to win 25-17 to even the match at 1-1.
- The third set was another closely-contested frame, as both teams were tied at 12-12 midway through. A quick 4-0 run following this point saw the Saints take a narrow lead, which ultimately held through the rest of the set. SMU led by as much as seven points down the stretch, and went on to win 25-22.
- Despite an early lead for the Saints, Northwest Nazarene fought back with a 9-3 run that put the Saints down 18-12 midway through. The Saints got back within two points late in the set at 23-21, but the Nighthawks rallied the final two points of the set to force a fifth frame.
- The fifth set was neck-and-neck, as it would take more than 15 points to win the final frame. The teams exchanged points through a 10-10 draw, before the Saints took a narrow 12-10 lead. The Nighthawks bounced back, tying the fifth set at 13-13. SMU saw match points at 15-14, 16-15, and 17-16, but Northwest Nazarene continued to battle back. NNU capitalized off two kills and an attack error to win the last three points, defeating Saint Martin's 19-17 to take the match.

- Emily Garten led the Saints with 21 kills.
- Kaarina Geymann recorded 54 assists, a new career high. The mark is tied for seventh most in a game by a Saint in program history.
- Zoey Crimin recorded five blocks.
- Mia Arambula led all players with 25 digs.
