Track & Field Shines at Spokane Riverfront Invitational

SMU Track & Field competed at the Spokane Riverfront Invitational from Thursday, February 6th through Saturday, February 8th.

SPOKANE, WA — The Saint Martin's University Track & Field team put on an impressive display at the Spokane Riverfront Invitational, racking up 13 personal records, seven season-bests, and two new all-time SMU Top 10 marks. The meet showcased the team's continued improvement, with standout performances across multiple events.

The Saints distance runners had a great weekend with multiple athletes earning PRs and season-best times. Noe Ortega, Ethan Coon, and Mira Jayarama each earned PRs in the 3000-meter races. In the 800m, Charis Deitemeyer and Kadence Merrit both earned PRs. Additionally, Matt Cooper and Timmy Higgins secured their season's best performances in the 800. Taylor Ames ran a PR in the mile while Jordan Pacheco-Mendez ran his best time of the season. Distance coach Gabriel Trimbur was encouraged by the group's standout performances:
"Our teams have run well these last couple of weeks. We've been able to celebrate 10 seasons' best performances and a couple of personal records as well! We always knew that the winter season was a time to rebuild after cross and I'm excited to see that each one of our athletes has been competitive in their respective events."

The sprinting group had multiple notable performances including PRs from Mariela Rodriguez and Joseph Aguilar in the 60m and 200m races. Treyton Corpuz ran a personal best in the 400m, while Madison Vu and Noah Boyd each ran their best time this season. Notably, the men's 4x400m relay team (Corpuz, Cooper, Kainalu Pagente, and Samuel Gray) secured the #4 all-time mark in SMU history with a stellar performance.

Multiple athletes secured PRs and season-best performances in the jumping events with Makhi Odoms earning PRs in both the long jump and triple jump while putting himself at #5 in the SMU record books. Additionally, Abdoul Zongo had personal records in the triple and long jump events. Alyssa Duncan recorded her best performance of the season in the long jump while Zack Takeshita recorded his best performance this season in the pole vault. To round out the jumping category, Ryan Doidge achieved his highest opening height, clearing 15' 0.25" in the pole vault.

With numerous PRs, season bests, and all-time top marks, SMU's track and field team is setting the stage for an exciting remainder of the season. The Saints will head to the GNAC Indoor Championships from February 17-18th to close out the indoor track and field season.
