ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Saint Martin's Baseball team (1-34, 1-18 GNAC) took on Central Washington University in a four-game GNAC series this past weekend but came up short in each contest, despite strong individual performances throughout the lineup.
The series opened with a tough 9-2 loss for the Saints. Saint Martin's managed to break through in the third inning when
Rylen Miyasaki delivered a clutch double to left center, allowing
Cade Gibson to come around and score. Later in the game,
Hunter Sasaki added an RBI of his own, giving the Saints their second run of the afternoon. Central Washington, in the end, would claim the first game by a score of 9-2. The Saints' bats came alive more in game two, but CWU's offense stayed hot.
Kelton Tom provided the big swing for Saint Martin's, launching a three-run homer over the left field fence to bring the Saints within striking distance.
Kyle Schabot had a solid day at the plate, tallying three hits and crossing the plate twice to help fuel the Saints' effort. However, Central Washington kept the pressure on, adding runs late to secure the win, 12-5.
Saint Martin's showed continued fight in Saturday's second game.
Alex Hartnett crushed a home run deep to left field, bringing in two RBIs and providing a jolt of energy to the Saints' dugout. The Saints managed to put together some base traffic but couldn't capitalize on enough opportunities to close the gap, and CWU would claim game three, 9-4. In the final game of the series, the Saints mounted a determined effort, coming just one run short in a narrow 5-4 loss that would see the Wildcats claim a walk-off victory.
Evan Nicol provided a highlight-reel moment, belting a solo home run to left field that sparked a late-game rally. The Saints threatened in the final innings but couldn't quite capitalize on their late opportunities, and would finish the series in Ellensburg with a loss.
