LACEY, WA & MONMOUTH, OR — The Saint Martin's University Baseball team (1-30, 1-14 GNAC) faced two challenging series in back-to-back weekends, playing Northwest Nazarene at home and Western Oregon on the road. Despite their best efforts, the Saints were unable to secure a win. Â
The Saints faced a tough Nighthawks squad on Saturday, March 22nd through the 24th. Saint Martin's would struggle offensively throughout the weekend, scoring two runs in the three games against the NNU. 0-12, 1-16, 1-9, all in favor of NNU. The last game of the series was suspended with the Saints trailing 2-15 in the top of the seventh, and will resume in Nampa when the Saints play NNU on April 25th. Â
The following weekend, the Saints took on the Western Oregon Wolves in a competitive four-game series. In the first game, the Wolves would take a 2-0 lead by the second inning. At the top of the fourth,
Peter Hollabaugh scored off a walk, which would remain the Saints only run for the game. Unable to overcome the lead taken by the Wolves, the Saints would drop the first game 1-4. In their second contest, the Saints would start strong, scoring three runs at the top of the first inning.
Kyle Schabot would hit a two-RBI single to right field and
Rylen Miyasaki would score off a wild pitch. Western Oregon's offense responded quickly, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. The Wolves stopped the Saints from scoring the rest of the game and took the second game of the series 3-6.Â
The Saints returned on Sunday looking for their first win against WOU. Although the first game of the day started off slow with four scoreless innings, the competition would heat up with the Saints scoring on a wild pitch at the top of the fifth inning. Zen Staszkow and
Kelton Tom. Hollabaugh would bring in Miyasaki in the top of the eighth to bring the Saints to a 4-3 lead. WOU would push the game into extra innings after a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After two extra innings, the Wolves would score the game winning run because of an SMU wild pitch. The Saints dropped the third game of the series 4-5. In the fourth and final game of the series, the Saints would fall 0-4 to the Wolves.Â
