LACEY, Wash. — The No. 22 Saint Martin's Men's Basketball team was victorious over Western Oregon by a score of 74-57 at Marcus Pavilion on Saturday, January 10.
After a bit of a slow start, the Saints put together a highly efficient shooting performance and benefited from 17-point performances from Kaden Hansen and Diego Trejo-Delgado.
The win improved the Saints' record to 13-2 overall and 5-0 in GNAC play, stretching the team's winning streak to 10 straight, the second longest winning streak in program history.
How It Happened
First Half
- The Saints shot efficiently in the first half, going 18-34 (52.9%) from the field and 7-14 (50%) from three-point range.
- The game was neck-and-neck out of the gates, as Western Oregon and Saint Martin's played to a 9-9 draw just over five minutes into the game.
- After the Saints fell behind 14-11, before a three-pointer by Omer Ege Peksari knotted the game at 14-14 with 12:18 left in the half.
- A big 14-0 run by Saint Martin's put the Saints up 28-16 with 7:34 on the clock — the run was capped off by back-to-back three-pointers from Kaden Hansen and Dae'Kwon Watson.
- With 4:07 left in the first half, Diego Trejo-Delgado pushed the lead to 16 (39-23) with a three-pointer assisted by Patrick Kilfoil.
- The Saints held a steady lead down the stretch in the first half, going into halftime leading 45-29.
- Kaden Hansen led the Saints with 14 points in the first half off 6-12 shooting. Dae'Kwon Watson recorded five steals in the first half.
Second Half
- After the Saints went up 50-32 early in the second half, a nearly three-minute scoreless streak was broken up by a pair of three-pointers from WOU's Parker Bauman, and an immediate answer from Kaden Hansen on the other end of the floor to put the Saints up 53-35 with 13:33 on the clock.
- A layup by Nari Jordan two possessions later gave the Saints their first 20-point lead of the game, going ahead 55-35 with 13:03 left in regulation.
- The Wolves pulled back within 12 (57-45) at the 7:31 mark behind a 10-2 run.
- The Saints pulled back ahead by 15 after a free-throw from Omer Ege Peksari and jumper by Diego Trejo-Delgado.
- Western Oregon trimmed the Saint Martin's lead to single digits, as a three-pointer with 4:28 on the clock trimmed the lead to 62-53. The Saints answered with a tip-in by Nari Jordan and fastbreak dunk by Omer Ege Peksari to go back ahead 66-53 with 3:37 remaining in regulation.
- The series of buckets translated into a 10-2 run that put Saint Martin's up 72-55 with 1:12 remaining in regulation, all but sealing the victory. The Saints held off any late comeback attempts from the Wolves, and won 74-57 at the final whistle.
Top Performers
- Kaden Hansen and Diego Trejo-Delgado led the scoring efforts with 17 points each. Hansen added three rebounds, three assists and one steal, while Trejo-Delgado totaled five rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.
- Dae'Kwon Watson totaled eight points, six steals, three rebounds, and one assist.
- Omer Ege Peksari tallied 10 points, six assists, four rebounds, and three steals.
