CONROE, Texas — Fresh off an upset of the top-ranked team in the country, the Saints improved to 3-1 on the season with a 1-1 day at the First Pitch Invitational in Conroe, Texas on Saturday, January 31.
Game 1: Saint Martin's 5, Angelo State 7
- The first inning was high scoring for both teams, as Saint Martin's added four runs in the top of the frame. The Saints did so off two errors on hard-hit ground balls and a two-RBI double by Taylor Orgeles.
- Angelo State bounced back in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs. The Rams did so off two errors, a two-RBI single, and another RBI single, making it 5-4 in favor of Angelo State.
- Each team scored a run in the second inning, with the Saints capitalizing off an RBI single from Kaylee Walker.
- Angelo State added an additional run in the fifth inning, but the Saints were unable to get on the board in the final five innings, falling 7-5.
Top Performers
Game 2: Saint Martin's 6, Texas A&M International 2
- The Saints scored two runs in the top of the first inning, as Shelby Lawson and Amanda Peterson each tallied RBIs.
- Later in the fourth, the Saints added a runny way of a Kaylee Walker RBI double.
- Kayla Vaughan pitched a terrific outing as the Saints' starter, throwing a scoreless five innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven batters. The Saints held a 3-0 lead through her start.
- Saint Martin's added an insurance run in the sixth inning off a home run by Alyssa Umemoto, before adding two more runs in the seventh off two errors, taking an emphatic 6-0 lead.
- The Saints allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but limited any further damage and won by a final score of 6-2.
Top Performers
- Kayla Vaughan earned the win for Saint Martin's, pitching a scoreless five innings and striking out seven batters. She allowed just two hits.
- Shelby Lawson went 2-3 with one RBI and one run.
- Alyssa Umemoto went 1-2 with an RBI and a run.
