Softball sweeps road series at Montana State Billings

BILLINGS, Mont. — The Saint Martin's Softball team wrapped up an efficient weekend at Montana State Billings, logging a 4-0 weekend that saw three five-inning wins.

The Saints saw efficient pitching performances, as well as the team's bats coming alive for 47 total runs across the series. The wins improved the Saints' record to 22-12 overall and 7-1 in GNAC play.

Game 1: Saint Martin's 8, MSU Billings 1

  • After a scoreless first two innings, the Saints broke through in the third with a four-run outing in the third inning.
  • After a leadoff walk by Haley Agena, Shelby Lawson hit a home run on the ensuing at-bat to put Saint Martin's ahead 2-0.
  • Jennessy Lopez later singled to score Kaylee Walker, and Layla Royle singled to score Taylor Orgeles, giving the Saints a 4-0 lead.
  • The Yellowjackets scored a run in the bottom of the third off an RBI single.
  • The Saints padded their lead, adding one run in the top of the sixth off a Haley Agena solo home run, and three runs in the top of the seventh off a three-RBI home run from Taylor Orgeles, cementing an 8-1 victory for Saint Martin's.

  • Taylor Orgeles went 2-4 with three RBIs and two runs.
  • Shelby Lawson went a-4 with two RBIs and one run.
  • Haley Agena went 1-2 with two runs and one RBI.
  • Bridget Johnson picked up her eighth win, throwing 4.0 innings and allowing one unearned run off five hits — she struck out two batters.
  • Heidi Leitz pitched three scoreless innings in relief, struck out three batters, and picked up the save.

Game 2: Saint Martin's 14, MSU Billings 4 (5 Innings)

  • The Saints saw their bats erupt in the second inning, rattling off 13 runs to build an insurmountable lead.
  • The entire Saints lineup hit twice during the inning, as Saint Martin's saw RBI hits from Haley Agena, Shelby Lawson, Elissa Dewees, and Heather Ebner. The Saints also saw runs from a bases-loaded walk and Yellowjacket error.
  • Montana State Billings cut into the advantage with a four-run third inning, but the Saints held the Yellowjackets off the board for the remainder of the game and added an additional run in the top of the fifth, walking away with a 14-4 victory.

Game 3: Saint Martin's 17, MSU Billings 1 (5 Innings)

  • Saint Martin's once again saw an eruption of its bats, scoring 14 runs in the first inning of game three to take an emphatic lead.
    • The Saints saw its entire lineup hit through twice, and five RBI hits and two home runs.
  • Saint Martin's added another run in the top of the second and two more runs in the third, building a 17-0 advantage after one, carrying off a 17-1 victory in the third game of the series.

Game 4: Saint Martin's 8, MSU Billings 0 (5 Innings)

  • The Saints ended the series with another five-inning victory, tallying 13 hits as a team.
  • An RBI single by Taylor Orgeles in the first inning put the Saints up 1-0, before Elissa Dewees, Heather Ebner and Kaylee Walker each tallied RBI hits in the second innings, combining for four runs and building a 5-0 lead for Saint Martin's.
  • Saint Martin's added two more runs in the fourth, as Heather Ebner hit a two-RBI home run.
  • Later in the fifth, Ebner reached on a fielder's choice that scored Elissa Dewees, putting the Saints ahead 8-0, a score that held through the final out.

The Saints will have a weekend without games, before returning to Lacey to face Central Washington for a four-game home series on April 11-12. April 12 will be Youth Day, where youth in attendance wearing a jersey can receive a free hot dog, and youth are invited to run the bases after the second game.
