Saints Women’s Soccer overcomes early deficit to defeat Warner Pacific 2-1

LACEY, Wash. — The Saint Martin's Women's Soccer team trailed 0-1 at halftime, but came back in the second half courtesy of two goals from freshman Peyton Bowser to defeat Warner Pacific 2-1 at Saints Soccer Field on Saturday, August 29.

Saint Martin's capitalized off a huge offensive effort in the second half to overcome the early deficit, holding an 11-3 advantage in shots that ultimately saw consecutive goals to put the Saints in front. The win, the first of the year for Saint Martin's, improved the team's record to 1-1 on the season.

How It Happened

  • The Saints held a 6-4 advantage in shots in the first half, but Warner Pacific held a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal and took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute off an unassisted goal from Litzy Gonzalez.
  • Leia Tupper led the Saints with two shots in the first half, while Anika Akiona and Leah Kalal each recorded a shot on goal. 
  • The Saints upped the tempo in the second half and an increase in opportunities, totaling 11 shots, six of which were on target.
  • In the 50th minute, freshman Peyton Bowser scored her first career collegiate goal, taking possession off a deflection and scoring an unassisted goal to level the game at 1-1.
  • After a series of fouls by Warner Pacific, Bowser scored again in the 58th minute, this time off an assist from Annika Akiona, to put Saint Martin's out in front 2-1.
  • The Saints kept the tempo, tallying three more shots on goal before the final whistle. Sam Escobar recorded a save in the 86th minute, keeping the Knights scoreless in the second half and securing the 2-1 victory.

Top Performers

  • Bowser led the way for Saints with two goals, doing so off five total shots and three shots on goal.
  • Leia Tupper totaled five shots, one of which was on target.
  • Sam Escobar recorded three saves in goal.
