SMU Tops Off California Trip With Upset Victory – A clutch 3-pointer by Jordan Kitchen and free throws by EJ Boyce and Luke Chavez secured the 73-70 road victory over Cal State Monterey Bay to begin the Saints' California road trip. After the Saints (3-1) stretched their lead to as large as 15 in the second half, Cal State Monterey Bay (1-4) slowly chipped away until it was a one possession game before a 3-pointer by Kitchen and successful trips to the line by Boyce and Chavez wrapped up the Saints' win. Saint Martin's scored the first 17 points of the game en route to the 77-67 victory over Academy of Act to begin the Cal Baptist Thanksgiving Classic. The Saints' (4-1) defense prevented Academy of Art (0-5) for scoring in the field for the first seven minutes and an opening 41-10 run fueled the Saints' third straight victory. Five Saints score in double-digits, including Jared Mathews' 19 points as Saint Martin's upsets No. 7 Cal Baptist 93-88 to wrap up the Cal Baptist Thanksgiving Classic. The Saints (5-1) handed the Lancers (6-1) their first loss of the season after shooting over 50 percent beyond the arc, along with 38 bench points in offensive shootout, to extend their win streak to four.
Saints Win GNAC Co-Team of the Week – After traveling to California for three games, Saint Martin's returned with three victories, including one over No. 7 Cal Baptist, and was named the Red Lion GNAC Co-Team of the Week by the conference office on Monday.
Luke Chavez Wins First GNAC Player of the Week – The junior guard averaged 19.0 points per game, 2.3 rebounds per game, 3.3 assists per game while shooting 54.5 percent from the floor and an impressive 56.3 percent beyond the arc. Chavez added nine steals and one block in the Saints' three games.
Saint Martin's Receive National Votes – The Saints earned eight votes in the NABC Poll to place 38th overall in the country, while receiving two votes in the D2CCA for 35th overall. SMU also tied for fifth in the latest West Region poll.
Hottest Start In Seven Years – With a 5-1 start, the Saints are off to one of the most successful starts in program history. The last time Saint Martin's went 5-1 to begin the year was 2010-2011.
Central Washington Preview – The Wildcats enter the first week of conference play with a 3-2 record with wins over Monterey Bay, Hawaii Hilo and Walla Walla. CWU's offense revolves around the freshman Khalil Shabazz, who has averaged 18.8 points per game, 5.5 rebounds per game and 2.3 assists per game to start the year. Another threat on the perimeter for Central is senior Jawan Stepney (14.3 ppg, 2.0 apg), shooting an efficient 57.5 percent from the floor and 53.8 percent beyond the arc. Down low, Fuguan Niles is nearly averaging a double-double at 10.0 ppg and a team leading 9.0 rpg, while shooting 71.4 percent from the field. Shabazz, Stepney and Niles added up to roughly 60 percent of the Wildcats' scoring. The Wildcats as a team average 69.8 points per game, and allow 73.0 points per game. CWU records 40.5 rebounds per game, 10.3 assists per game on 18.5 turnovers per game with 7.5 steals per game, and 3.0 blocks per game. Central Washington is shooting 42.4 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent beyond the arc and 68.1 percent at the line.
Northwest Nazarene Preview – The Nighthawks, under new head coach Paul Rush, has begun the 2017-18 campaign with a 4-2 record. NNU will face Seattle Pacific before the Saints come to town on Saturday. The Saints will have to stop the conference leading scorer and second top rebounder Maurice Jones (21.1 ppg, 10.5 rpg). With four straight double-doubles to open the year, Jones is living up to the Preseason GNAC All-Conference selection. Along with Jones, the Nighthawks feature three more scorers averaging double-digits per game. Obi Megwa is second on the team at 16.8 ppg and fellow guard Jayden Bezzant is third at 14.0 ppg. Khalil Thompson completes the scoring trio outside at 13.8 ppg. The three guards and Jones combined for nearly 80 percent of the Nighthawks' offense, and 50 percent of their rebounding and assists. As a team, Northwest Nazarene is averaging 83.7 points per game and allowing 81.5 points per game. The Nighthawks record 40.2 rpg, 9.5 apg on 14.3 turnovers per game, with 7.3 steals per contest, and 1.8 blocks per game NNU is shooting 43.8 percent from the field, 34.2 percent beyond the arc, and 68.6 percent at the line.
GNAC Recap – Entering the first week of conference action, No. 10 Western Oregon sits atop the standings at a perfect 6-0. Montana State Billings also carries a perfect 5-0 resume into the week. Saint Martin's, with their four-game winning streak sits third at 5-1 overall. Northwest Nazarene, Seattle Pacific, and Simon Fraser all enter the week tied for fourth at 4-2. Central and Western Washington are gridlocked for seventh at 3-2 while Concordia sits eighth at 4-3. Alaska Anchorage and Alaska round out the conference with 4-4 and 2-4 records respectively.
