Josh Schulz Takes Second Overall At UW Open's Long Jump

SEATTLE – Josh Schulz, on his final attempt in the long jump, hit the 7.00-meter mark exactly, placing second overall in the event as five Saints broke personal records at the University of Washington Indoor Open on Sunday.

"Today was a good tune up for many of our athletes who will be competing at the GNAC Championships next week in Boise," said head coach Jim Brewer. "Liz Larson placed second in the weight throw, setting a pr, while Mark (Mikulak) won a heat of the 60-meter hurdles. Aryia (Kendrick) set a big personal record in the 60-meter hurdles running 9.36 seconds. Yadira Lopez ran a very consistent race averaging 61 seconds per lap and finishing her mile in 5:14 minutes. Andrew Kier PR'd in the 60-meter dash and Josh Schulz had a good jump, close to his pr and school record."
 
In the women's 60-meter dash, Taylor Tandecki placed second in her section with a time of 8.26 seconds, while Alycia Frazier also took second her section at 8.77 seconds. Artresa Nickelson came in third in her section of the 200-meter with a time of 27.14 seconds. Yadira Lopez was only five seconds behind the leader of her section of the 1-mile when she finished with a time of 5:14.54 seconds, beating runners from D-I schools Seattle U and Hawaii. Ariya Kendrick won her section of the 60-meter hurdles at 9.36 seconds to round out the Saints on the track side of action.
 
Ashley Vest tied for ninth in the first flight of the high jump, reaching 1.45-meters, clearing the height on her first attempt. Tiffany Pott placed 10th in the second flight of the high jump, marking 1.55-meters on her second attempt at the height. Teammate Cassidy Apo finished 11th in the same flight with a height of 1.50-meters. Ashleigh Fraser took home fifth in her flight of the long jump, hitting 5.10-meters on her third and final jump.
 
Megan Vernoy placed ninth in the shot put event, hitting 11.26-meters on her second throw of the day, beating out athletes from Portland State and San Francisco State. One major highlight of the day was Liz Larsen placing second in the first flight of the weight throw, reaching 14.01-meters.
 
Matt DeHan and Logan Armstrong nearly finished with identical times in the 60-meter dash, ending at 7.24 and 7.25 seconds respectively. Andrew Kier was the third Saint in the race, finishing with a time of 7.60 seconds. In the 200-meter dash, Jackson Hand took third in his section with a time of 22.27 seconds, while Guillaume Tabary also placed third in his section at 23.54 seconds. Tabary also competed in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.67 seconds, second best in his section. Mark Mikulak rounded out the events on the track side, winning his section of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.11 seconds, .06 faster than second place.
 
For the Saints in the field events, Chris Rickard took home sixth in his flight of the pole vault, reaching 4.28-meters in his first attempt at the mark. His teammate Cyrus Marshall was tied for 16th in the flight at 3.83-meters. DeHan also saw action in the long jump, and on his second attempt hit the mark 5.97-meters, eighth best in the flight. Josh Schulz shined once again in the long jump, hitting 7.00-meters, his mark coming on his sixth attempt, which earned him second overall in the event. Anthony Manago placed ninth in the same flight as Schulz, ending with a mark of 6.56-meters.
