Saints Fall In GNAC Title Game To Western Oregon, 65-55 – All season long, the Saints have lived and died by the 3-point shot, and in the GNAC Championship game, SMU shot just 20 percent. Third ranked Western Oregon limited the number of looks the Saints created, en route to a 65-55 victory and a GNAC Championship. Both teams looked evenly matched in the first half, with neither side leading by more than six points. Saint Martin's (24-7), the best 3-point shooting team in the GNAC, was unable to find their rhythm from outside, and Western Oregon (29-1) capitalized on the droughts, grinding away for a GNAC title.
Luke Chavez Hits Game-Winning Shot, Sends Saints To First GNAC Championship Game – After an overturned call, put Western Washington at the free throw line with 4.9 seconds, the Vikings hit one free throw to take a 68-67 lead.
BJ Standley found a cutting
Luke Chavez who reached the top of the arc, and hit the game-winning shot to put Saint Martin's in the GNAC Championship for the first time in school history. The Saints (24-6) had led for most of the game, including a 15-point lead in the first half; however, an offensive drought and consistent Western Washington (21-8) pressure, the game was tied at 67-67 in the final minute. With the game and possibly the season on the line, head coach
Alex Pribble turned to his first team All-Conference selection and Newcomer of the Year in Chavez, paying off with a trip to the GNAC Championships.
Saints Grind Out Overtime Victory Over Central Washington, Advance To GNAC Semifinals – Beating a team three times in a season is never easy, and it took an extra five minutes for the Saints to pull past Central Washington in the opening game of the GNAC Championships in Anchorage, Alaska. The Saints led by as many as 14 in the second half; however, foul trouble and a stretch of over seven minutes without a field goal, allowed Central Washington to climb back in and tied the game. In overtime, without
Luke Chavez, the Saints back came down three to go-ahead by three, sealing the victory with a last second block by
Matt Dahlen.
The Saints Are Going Dancing – The Saints are going dancing for the first time in school history. The Saints' men's basketball team heard their name called in the NCAA Selection Show, being tabbed as the fifth seed in the West Regional, facing four seed Cal Poly Pomona in the first round. In what has been a historic season for the Saints, and maybe their greatest ever in school history, one that dates back to 1940, the Saints added a NCAA Tournament Appearance to their list of accomplishments.
SMU Receives Votes In National Poll – Following 14 wins in their last 15 games, including a win over Central Washington and Western Washington at the GNAC Championships last week, the Saints received one votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Poll on Tuesday.
Saints Rise In NCAA West Regional Poll – After two victories to close out the season, the Saint Martin's Men's Basketball team moved up one spot in the NCAA West Regional rankings. The Saints improved their record to 24-7 overall after defeating Central Washington and Western Washington at the GNAC Championships last week. As a result, the Saints moved up to fifth in the standings. Joining the Saints from the GNAC in the poll is Western Oregon, who remained at the top spot, and who will host the NCAA West Regionals.
Luke Chavez Named Newcomer of the Year, First Team All-Conference – Chavez, the only three-time GNAC Player of the Week award winner this season, led the Saints in scoring at 16.0 points per game. He reached the double-digit scoring mark 18 times and managed a season-high nine rebounds vs Montana State Billings in January, and eight assists against The Evergreen State College back in December.

Saints Reach 20-win Mark – With their road victory over Montana State Billings, 77-60, last week, the Saints clinched their 20th victory of the season. Only the second time in program's history, since joining the NCAA in 1998, have the Saints reached 20-wins. The first came during the 2008-09 campaign when the Saints finished with 22 wins.
EJ Boyce Leads Conference –
EJ Boyce leads the GNAC in 3-pointers made per game at 3.0 by knocking down 93 shots beyond the arc in 31 games. His 43.5 3-point field goal percentage is 6th best in the conference. On the year, Boyce is averaging 11.6 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 2.7 apg, 0.7 spg in 32.0 minutes per game.

Matt Dahlen Peaking At The Right Time – Down the stretch, in the final ten games, Dahlen has risen to challenge, providing 13.2 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game. He has reached the double-digit mark in five consecutive games including his third double-double of the season against Northwest Nazarene at 25 points and 10 rebounds. Also during the final home stretch, Dahlen broke the school's single-game record for most blocks with seven against Alaska Fairbanks.
Chavez Named Saint Of The Month – Every month, Saint Martin's names one male and one female athlete Saint of the Month. Chavez earned his second award after being named GNAC Player of the Week back-to-back times and averaged 17.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, and 3.9 apg while shooting 49.5 percent from the field in the month of January.
