Saints Take Series Win Off Art U With 7-1 Victory – The Saints sealed the series win behind the efforts of
Justice Yamashita and
Finnley Butler who showcased lights out pitching, holding ART U to only one run. SMU lit up the scoreboard early on with three runs, and it wasn't until the fifth inning that the Urban Knights put one on the board. The Saints managed to add two more runs, and SMU's pitching staff continued to shut out Academy of Art to take the series win.
Saints' Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Academy of Art – In the second game of the series, SMU took an early 3-0 lead, which did not hold long as the Urban Knights quickly tied it up then took the lead with two more runs in the fifth. SMU managed to tie it up, but Academy of Art proceeded to regain the lead and held onto this to seal the victory.
With the series being split 1-1, the Saints came out with fire under their belt and took a 3-2 lead in the third inning, and then never looked back. SMU added four insurance runs to finish out the game with a 7-3 victory.
McNicoll's Extra Inning Home Run Powers Saints In 8-7 Victory - In the opening game, The Saints were the first to get on the board in the fourth inning. It wasn't until the seventh inning that Academy of Art took the lead for the first time; however, the Saints quickly
answered back in the eighth inning. ART U sent the game into extra innings with two runs, but in the end it was Saint Martin's that took the game in the 11th inning led by McNicoll with his first homerun of the season.
Renaud Back In Full Force – Renaud started off the 2020 season with a bang, beginning the first weekend on Friday with two hits off of four at-bats in the first of the four game series against Holy Names. In the second game, he scored one run and finished with one RBI while reaching base two times on walks. He helped lead the Saints to victory in the third and fourth games, scoring one of the Saints runs, two hits, and reached base twice on walks. In the series against Academy of Art, Renaud added six hits and three RBIs, holding his batting average at .462. Renaud continues his standings on the leaderboard, ranking third in batting average.
Fresh On Scene – New to the team,
Finnley Butler,
Jacob Woodall, and
Drew Rose have proven to make their mark early in the season with a combined 14.1 innings while accumulating 12 total strikeouts.
Finnley Butler who comes from Boise, Idaho, finished the first game of the series against Holy Names giving up only three hits, and no runs after pitching three innings. He did it again in another game against Academy of Art, pitching three shutout innings with one strikeout. Rose, a freshman from South Bend, Washington, has yet to allow any runs in five total innings pitched with nine total strikeouts. He earned his first career save against Holy Names.
Jacob Woodall, a freshman from Anchorage, Alaska, made his mark against Holy Names with three shutout innings, allowing only two hits to help lead the Saints to victory.
Stand Em' Up Sit Em' Down – Senior transfer
Harrison Goebel started out the season by punching out seven batters in 5.1 strong innings, while allowing only one run on three hits in the third game of the Holy Names series. In the Academy of Art series, Goebel appeared in 6.1 innings, allowing only three earned runs and secure another victory for the Saints. He moved up the leaderboard from last week, now ranking third in the GNAC in strikeouts per nine innings with 11.57.
Saints' Baseball Voted Fourth In GNAC Preseason Coaches' Poll – A season removed from reaching the program's first GNAC Championship game, the Saints were ranked fourth in the GNAC Preseason Coaches' Poll on Friday. Defending GNAC Champions, Montana State Billings, earned the first place ranking with four first place votes and 33 points total. Western Oregon, who nabbed one first place vote, followed closely behind with 31 points. Northwest Nazarene earned third overall with 22 points. Central Washington and Saint Martin's tied for fourth overall with 15 points, and Concordia rounded out the group with 10 points.
Season Preview – Saint Martin's returns a core of key players from last year's squad, headlined by All-Region pitcher
Tanner Inouye. Inouye went 4-6 with a 4.58 ERA while striking out 87 in 72.2 innings of work. Inouye threw two completed games in 13 starts.
On the offensive side, All-Conference first baseman
Aaron Renaud leads the lineup with a .319 batting average, one home run, and 26 RBIs. Joining him in the infield is All-Conference shortstop
Ryne Oshiro, and All-Conference third baseman
Micah McNicoll. Oshiro is coming off a .283 season with three home runs and 22 RBIs. McNicoll developed into a .282 hitter with two home runs, and 16 RBIs.
Saint Martin's will also bring back their backstop from last season,
Bryant Nakagawa. The junior catcher posted a .227 batting average, with three extra base hits, and 17 hits.
Other notable returners from last season include infielder
Isaac Hegamin and
Dakota Hill, along with outfielders
Cody Chavis,
Elijiah Santiago, and
Hunter Holmason.
On the rubber, Saint Martin's will have familiar arms in
Benjamin Wadowski, and
Zach Alcos to add to Inouye.
The Saints bring in many new faces for the 2020 season including six position players, and 14 pitchers.
