LACEY, Wash. – Saint Martin's high-flying, high-scoring offense overmatched the Geoducks' defense as the Saints routed Evergreen State 95-66 on Saturday night.
The Geoducks (1-6) had no answer inside for Saints' (7-3) posts
Brett Reed and
Marky Adams. The two combined for 33 points, 10 rebounds, and shot a staggering 16-for-21 from the field. Coupled with
Christian Haffner's team-leading 20 points, 18 of which came from behind the arc, the Saints run away with a victory over the local rival.
Evergreen State jumped out to the early 12-9 lead in the opening minutes, capitalizing on mid-range shots against the Saints' defense. After a couple adjustments, the Saints roared to life with a 12-2 run, and never gave back the lead.
By the 4:00 minute mark left in the first half, the Saints had turned a 3-point deficit into a 22-point lead, going on a 34-9 run. Only four Saints scored during the run including Reed, Adams, Haffner, and
Jaden Nielsen-Skinner. The Saints' 52 first half points was the second time this week SMU ended the half with 50+ points.
Saint Martin's continued to play unselfish basketball in the second half, shooting 50 percent (18-for-36) from the field. As a team, SMU ended with 25 assists on 40 made field goals, and only nine turnovers. The domination inside the paint for the Saints added up to a staggering 54 points in the paint. The Saints cruised down the stretch to the 29-point victory.
