LACEY, Wash. – Total team effort. It was a complete team victory for the Saints as SMU cruised to the 91-33 victory over short-handed Puget Sound on Wednesday.
Christian Haffner led the scoring with 18 points off the bench, as 11 Saints (6-3) got into the scoring ledger. The bench for the Saints combined for 52 points, with three of the Saints' four double-digits scorers coming from the pine. As a team, Saint Martin's shot nearly 50 percent from the floor, and 47 percent beyond the arc, while limiting Puget Sound (4-5) to just 21 percent from the field.
Saint Martin's quickly opened the scoring up with a 14-0 run in the first few minutes. Puget Sound's best stretch came just after when the Loggers went on a 9-3 run. SMU bounced back and never looked back.
The Saints led from wire-to-wire, fueled by their 11 3-pointers in the first half alone.
Alex Schumacher was the lone starter to reach double digits in scoring with 15 points, along with six assists, and three steals. Saint Martin's carried a 52-17 lead into halftime.
Haffner scored 12 of his 18 points in the first half and finished the game with all 18 coming from beyond the arc.
Champ Spencer scored a career-high 14 points, along with
Tyke Thompson coming in at 11.
Saint Martin's moved the ball seamlessly as a unit, finishing with 24 assists on 34 made baskets. The Saints also controlled the boards, outrebounding the Loggers to a tune of 46 to 38.
