MONMOUTH, Ore. – Saint Martin's used a 29-0 run in the second half to power past Western Oregon for the second straight game and improve to 13-4 on the season.
Alex Schumacher continued to torch the Wolves' defenses after going for an 11-point, 10-rebound performance on Thursday, the guard led the way with 27 points, six rebounds, and eight assists.
Brett Reed (19 points, 10 rebounds),
Kyle Greeley (17 points, seven rebounds), and
Champ Spencer (15 points, five 3-pointers) combined for 78 of the Saints' (13-4, 6-2 GNAC) 89 points on the night. As a team, Saint Martin's shot nearly 56 percent from the field, and beyond the arc.
The Saints began the game on a 7-2 run and never looked back. Western Oregon (3-12, 2-5) never led in the game from start to finish. Saint Martin's lead jumped to double-digits around the eight-minute mark on a Fastbreak layup from Schumacher. Both sides traded baskets and momentum back and forth with Saint Martin's taking a 45-37 lead into the locker room.
Western Oregon managed to tie up the game in the opening minutes of the second half, before the Saints broke it open. In an absolute dominate showing over nearly 10 minutes, the Saints took a tied game, and turned it into a 29-point lead. During the run, five Saints scored, led by Reed's nine points, along with Spencer at six, Greeley at five, Schumacher with four, and
Tyke Thompson with a 3-pointer.
With just seven minutes left on the clock, Saint Martin's coasted down the stretch to sweep the Wolves on the season series and claim their GNAC best sixth win of the season.
