BURNABY, BC – It was a tale of two halves for the Saints north of the border, after leading by as many as 22 in the first, Simon Fraser roared back to win the game in the final seconds on a driving floater to knock off the Saints 64-63.
Saint Martin's (14-7, 7-5 GNAC) dominated the first half of action, building up a sizable lead on hot starts from
Tyke Thompson,
Marky Adams, and
Brett Reed. With 4:17 left in the half, Saint Martin's had opened up a 22-point lead. Simon Fraser (10-8, 5-5) found life at the end of the half, scoring 10 straight until a Schumacher layup as time expired broke the run and gave SMU a 39-25 lead.
However, the Saints were unable to find that same output in the second half, being held by Simon Fraser to only 24 points. SFU rallied back, and took their first lead of the game, and the last one, on a floater 5-feet out with just seconds left on the clock.
Saint Martin's led the game from the first possession, until SFU's game-winning shot with seven seconds left on the clock.
Kyle Greeley got one final look at the basket, but his fade away jumper fell just short as the Saints fell 64-63.
In the opening half, Saint Martin's shot 57 percent from the field, and 40 percent beyond the arc. But the numbers dropped to 42 and 17 percent respectively in the second half. Simon Fraser connected on nine 3-pointers in the game, with seven coming in the second half.
The Saints continued their road trip with a stop in Bellingham at Western Washington on Saturday. Live stats and video of the game will be available on smusaints.com.
