LACEY, WA — The Saint Martin's University Track & Field program has a familiar face taking charge as head coach, John Schultz.
As he steps into the role of head coach, his journey and contributions to athletics mark a significant milestone for the team. He was a major contributor in setting the foundation of hammer throw throughout the state, building the first competition-used hammer cage in 2000. His hands-on approach and dedication have not only improved the facility but also inspired countless athletes and coaches.
This past season, Schultz served as the interim head coach, focusing on achieving personal records for his athletes. Under his leadership, the team experienced a positive shift, culminating in a strong 2023-2024 season. This momentum is set to continue, with a cohort of new coaches joining the program and a promising group of young returners. One of Schultz's key initiatives as head coach is fostering a family atmosphere within the program. He has implemented a leadership group comprising representatives from all grades and events, ensuring that student-athletes have a voice in the program. This approach not only addresses small issues promptly but also creates a sense of buy-in and commitment among the athletes.
Schultz's rich coaching background includes four years as an assistant and interim head coach at Saint Martin's University, as well as head coaching at Renton High School. His extensive experience also spans over 20 years as an assistant track coach at Centralia High School and a decade with the USATF Lewis County Track Club. His coaching accolades include mentoring seven all-conference athletes at SMU, coaching two-time USATF National Champions, and guiding the 2007 Washington State Gatorade Track Athlete of the Year. Schultz has also coached six state champions and has been a presenter at USATF Coaches Clinics. Recognized for his expertise, he was selected as an Elite Coach by the USA Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. Beyond his coaching career, Schultz's personal background is equally impressive. He holds a BA from Pacific Lutheran University, an MAT from Lewis and Clark College, and Principal Credentials from Heritage University. With 39 years in public education, he has also coached high school football and wrestling. Schultz has been married for over 40 years and is a proud father of four and grandfather of nine. As Saint Martin's University looks ahead, the future is bright under Schultz's leadership.
With a young team set for the next season and an outstanding incoming recruiting class, the program is poised for continued success. Schultz's vision, combined with his extensive experience and dedication to creating a supportive and inclusive team environment, promises an exciting era for Saint Martin's Track and Field.
