Jim Fouts was an outstanding athlete and student leader at Saint Martin’s College. He lettered three times as a running back and defensive halfback. As a freshman, he was awarded the Most Inspirational Award by his teammates. He was a superior baseball player and led his team for three years as a catcher. After a serious football injury his senior year, Fouts became the assistant football and basketball coach and head baseball coach at Saint Martin’s High School. As a senior, he was named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and won the Flynn Memorial Award presented to the graduating varsity athlete with the highest grade point average. As a coach at North Thurston High School, he was named league coach of the year 13 times and twice was named the Washington State Baseball Coach of the Year. He was inducted into Saint Martin's Hall of Fame in 1991.
