A two-sport athlete, Julie Mattson gained numerous accolades at SMC from 1997-2000. She was the first athlete to represent the college at the national track meet as she qualified for the NCAA championship in the javelin in 2000. She placed ninth at the national meet with a throw of 134-5. She took second at the PacWest Conference championship in the shot put with a throw of 41-3 ¼. Mattson set the school record in both the javelin and shot put. Her javelin throw of 140 feet and shot put of 42-6.5 remain school records. She was second in PacWest history in the javelin and fourth in the shot put. Mattson was also the starting point guard for the Saints women’s basketball team for three years. She was inducted into Saint Martin's Hall of Fame in 2009.
