In three seasons from 1939 to 1942, John “Hotfoot” Katica was three times named to the Washington Intercollegiate Conference All-Conference basketball team. In 1941 and 1942, he was a unanimous choice. During the 1940-41 season he had the highest scoring average in the conference. In the 1941-42 season, he broke the conference scoring record with 226 points in 16 games, averaging 14.1 points per game. In a 1940 game against Mount Angel College, he scored 37 points and Saint Martin’s won 60-39.  After graduation and during WWII in the Army Transport Service, he played for two seasons in the Pacific Coast Professional League. He was inducted in 1990 into SMU’s Hall of Fame.
